Samsung tips: 10 Galaxy S4 “hidden” features and tricks

In a new blog post, Samsung describes ten “hidden” or “semi-secret” features of the Galaxy S4, which some of you may not be aware of.
Coincidentally or not, the Samsung post went live on the same day Verizon and Motorola unveiled new Droid smartphones, and a day ahead of the upcoming Nexus 7 announcement.
Here are these semi-secret Galaxy S4, as tipped by the company:

1) Swiping down with two fingers offers access to the full Quick Settings panel. (How: swipe down from the status bar with two fingers. Touch and hold to access settings. Long-tap an icon to drag it into a different place.)

2) The TV remote control can be added to the notification panel for quick access. (How: Application screen > WatchOn > Settings).

3) The keyboard can be pop-up-ed on top of other apps for multi-tasking-like features. (How: With the keyboard active, tap the settings icon on the left of the space bar and then select the pop-up keyboard icon.)

4) A blocking mode can be set up to prevent the phone from ringing on incoming calls and other notifications. (How: Settings > My device > Blocking mode.)

5) A Wi-Fi timer app should help users save cellular data, as the phone will try to connect to available Wi-Fi networks for a specific period of time. (How: Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi Timer.)

6) With the Adapt Sound function, users can improve (and properly calibrate) the sound quality of their Galaxy S4, especially those people affected by hearing impairments. (How: Settings > My device > Sound > Adapt Sound > Start.)

7) In-call audio can also be optimized in order to improve call experience. (How: Settings > My device > Call.)

8) Video watching on the Galaxy S4 also has some “hidden” features such as pinch-to-zoom (for enlarging and shrinking the image on the screen). Brightness and volume adjustments are available also. (How: activate the bars when touching the left and right side of the screen, respectively.)

9) The camera can be accessed directly from the lock screen for quicker pictures and videos. (How: Settings > My device > Lock screen > Lock screen widgets > Camera. Feature requires lock screen to be other than pattern of PIN.)

10) The lock screen message can be personalized with custom fonts and colors. (How: Settings > My device > Lock screen > Lock screen widgets > Edit personal information; if screen is protected with pattern or PIN lock. Or: Tap and hold the lock screen message and drag it down from the screen.)

It has been a few days since Apple release a new firmware in the form of iOS 6.1.4 for iPhone 5, so those of you who own the sixth-generation Apple’s handset can now take advantage of the update and install it.

   Download µTorrent at here. If you are using GNU/linux, Try Transmission or Ktorrent. uTorrent is what's called a BitTorrent client. Your client is a piece of software that communicates with lots of other computers via a server on the internet. In order to download torrent files, you'll need a BitTorrent client.

   In the Speed Guide, select the speed that best corresponds to the number you retrieved in your speed test. If your computer is running on a slower connection, such as a 56k dial-up, expect your download speeds to be significantly slower.

   Choose a port number somewhere in the acceptable range. The acceptable port range is between 49512 and 65535. Type in an arbitrary number somewhere in between the two and test your port number.

   Enable encryption. Encryption is the process by which your client disguises your connection speed in order to keep ISPs from throttling it. If an ISP recognizes a client downloading a bunch of data, it may choose to throttle it in order to keep it from monopolizing the connection.    Take a look at seeders and leechers. On the right of the page you can see the seeders and leechers. Seeders are people who have completely downloaded the file and are sharing it with others. Leechers are people who are currently downloading the file and thus share only a fraction of the file. Always select the torrent with the most Leechers and seeders.

   Always check the comments on the torrent. Some torrents may contain viruses or corrupt files. If the file seems to check out, you can go ahead without worrying about viruses or other compromising factors.

• This bandwidth intensive activity is frowned upon by some ISPs who will try to throttle BitTorrent traffic. You can enable Traffic Encryption, which may or may not speed up your downloads.
• You'll need Winrar or 7zip to extract any compressed archives you download.
• If you are an advanced user, and you want to speed up µTorrent, you can do this by forwarding your µTorrent port on your router.
• A high speed internet connection will allow you to download faster, but beware of any bandwidth limits (e.g. 90 GB/mth) imposed by your ISP.

Edit Warnings

• Do NOT install uTorrent - instead, create "uTorrent" folder in any drive's "Program Files", and MOVE your freshly downloaded uTorrent executable there, thus preventing uTorrent from inflicting malware. (uTorrent crew found a workaround for this trick, no longer works now)
• Be sure to check comments of the file you are downloading to avoid downloading infected/fake files.
• Downloading pirated software/music/movies will put you at risk of getting caught and having copyright infringement charges pressed on you.

Before you do anything — Make a backup

Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:

• SMS/MMS messages,
• Call Log,
• Bookmarks,
• Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example,
• Any application data not on the SD card.

It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.
MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.

Before you begin, if VISIONary is installed on the HTC Desire Z, uninstall it before continuing.

1. You will need ADB on the computer to root the HTC Desire Z and to flash the necessary files for radio S-OFF. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the ADB shell on the computer.
2. Download busybox, the ClockworkMod Recovery, the Engineering HBoot, gfree 1.0, psneuter, root_psn, Superuser package:

3. Unzip the zip files and copy the contents to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
4. Connect the HTC Desire Z to the computer via USB.
5. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on the HTC Desire Z by checking Settings » Applications » Development » USB debugging.
6. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:

   adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/

   adb push hboot-eng.img /data/local/tmp/

   adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp/

   adb push recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img /data/local/tmp/recovery.img

   adb push root_psn /data/local/tmp/

   adb push su /sdcard/

   adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/

   adb shell

   chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/*

   /data/local/tmp/psneuter

   NOTE: You will drop out of the shell after this command. Restart the shell using:

   adb shell

   cd /data/local/tmp

   ./gfree -f -b hboot-eng.img -y recovery.img

7. As it is very important that the hboot was installed correctly gfree calculates md5sums of the partition. It will calculate the following 3 checksums

   • md5sum #1 - checksum of partition 18 before the installation
   • md5sum #2 - checksum of the hboot image that should be installed
   • md5sum #3 - checksum of partition 18 after the installation

8. The messages that you what to see are either/or

   • md5sum #1 == md5sum #2 - the hboot image is already installed -> skipping installation
   • md5sum #3 == md5sum #2 - the hboot image was successfully installed -> OK!

9. If you get a different error message then DO NOT REBOOT and join #G2Root on Freenode for further help.
10. If gfree worked correctly continue with:

    ./root_psn

    sync

    reboot

11. The HTC Desire Z is now rooted with S-OFF, the Engineering HBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery. Continue to the next section.
